Ringtones – What are the Differences Between Mp3, Mono and Poly?

Carmelita Moore asked:

The mobile market has been booming these past few years. All over the world, millions of people have embraced the mobile world into their life. Most of them are into it so much that they can not imagine going out of the house without their cell phones with them. Part of the fun of having a cell phone today is that you can upload all sorts of interesting mobile ringtones. You can use these cell phone ringtones for sounding when you have an inbound call, to let you know when you have an audio message, and also when you receive an instant message as well.

Many inexperienced Ringtone users may be overwhelmed by the technical jargon they encounter when trying to purchase or use a new Ringtone. Terms such as monophonic and polyphonic ringtones, MP3 ringtones or baud rate and the like are enough to shake many non-technophiles. But in general it’s not that hard and the different Ringtones can be broken down to three different kinds that are in operation now:

1. Polyphonic ring tones make use of multiple tones that are played simultaneously with the instrumental sounds created by guitars, drums, violins, pianos, cymbals and more. This creates a harmonious sound that you will never hear from a monotone. Polyphonic ringtones are able to much more accurately reproduce complex sounds than previous technologies, and, for this reason, phones that can handle polyphonic ringtones are much more popular thantheir monophonic rivals.

2. Real Music ringtones or MP3 Ringtones, are ringtones that came from “real” or actual songs. They use original pieces of music along with lyrics, exactly as the original recording. The format is usually MP3, WAV, WMA, etc. This feature and support for real music ringtones is being built into most new models of almost all mobile phone manufacturers. Real Music Ringtones are also called true tones, real tones, voice tones, full music or MP3 ringtones.

3. Monophonic is the simplest of ringtone technology that uses a MIDI format. This one note wonder changed ringtones and no more would you hear simple chirps and chimes, but rather, you could play a popular song. A single note playing a song resembles a monophonic ringtone sound. You can recognize your favorite song, but it sounds a little off, because there is not that much control with a single tone format.

Ringtones are available in various forms. One of the reasons why personalized ringtones are enjoying such an immense popularity all over the world is because of the ability to actually bring your personality to your phone. With personalized ringtones you can immediately show to other people what kind of person you are the moment they hear your ringtone. If you are the goofy type of person then you’d have one of those funny songs, a hilarious joke or a funny sound effect as your ring tone. If you are the romantic type then love songs would usually be your ringtone. The adventurous people may select rock or techno music as their ringtones. Of course, anime fans will definitely get anime theme songs as their ringtones. There are endless possibilities on how to customize your cell phone. You can download ringtones, compose them or even buy them on various websites. No matter what your personal taste could be, there is definitely already a ringtone for it.

What are Ringtones

adam crook asked:

What is Ringtones?

Ringtones are melodic sounds a cellular or cell phone makes when an incoming call or message arrives. Since cellular phones are significantly more sophisticated than landline phones, ringtones can be personalized to suit the owner’s personal taste. A variety of ringtones have appealed to consumers, increasing handsets saleability.

Why use Ringtones

There are a number of reasons consumers use distinct ringtones.

1) Distinguish Callers – Advanced feature sets allow for different sounds to signify different callers.

2) Identification – When you are in a meeting and a phone rings you will know if its yours without having to look

3) Fun – Lets face, having a cell phone with personality and character is appealing to general consumers

Types of Ringtones

There are typically two different types of ringtones: monophonic ringtones and polyphonic ringtones.

Monophonic Ringtones

Monophonic tones are simple tunes, most commonly compatible with today’s cell phones. The majority of cell phones can only make a single tone at a time. The monophonic ringtone tune is comprised of a series of sequential tones at different frequencies.

Polyphonic Ringtones

Polyphonic tones are played on cellular phones that have the capability of playing up to 16 separate tones at once. The combination of tones creates a harmonic melody. Polyphonic ringtones are more musical than a monophonic ringtone. Newer phones support polyphonic ringtones.

It is likely that future cell phones will be capable of producing musical ringtones of CD quality.

Finding Ringtones & Ringtone Compatibility

There are a number of websites that offer ringtones, graphics or even games to download onto your cell phone. The websites vary in that some allow you to purchase specific ringtones while others offer subscriptions that allow you to download an unlimited number of ringtones. When you locate a ringtone be sure to first ensure that it will work with your cellular model phone and that the site is respectful of the artists copyright. Like any original works, artists receive royalties for ringtones, be sure that the website has the permission to distribute the ringtone. Sites that we’ve found helpful in finding ringtones and determining compatibility are:

Ringtone Composition

Frequently consumers will wish to compose personalized ringtones. Occasionally, cell phones can be programmed with ringtones by entering a series of buttons. Software is also available that allow consumers to create their own melodic ringtones. The software runs on a computer, and once the tune is perfected it can be transferred to the phone via a data cable.

Omd Polyphonic Ringtones: a Cell Phone Delight

Marie Sanders asked:

Remember when cell phones only had MIDI format ringtones? Imagine having to look for a ringtone of the musical group Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark, or OMD, in a MIDI format back then. I think it would have been near to impossible; you would have had to make your own OMD MIDI ringtone. Thankfully though, with the years technology has advanced a lot and now, even though every cell phone still supports MIDI format ringtones, you can have your favorite song in excellent quality as a polyphonic ringtone. You can even have your favorite OMD Polyphonic ringtones.

For those of you that don’t know, MIDI ringtones differentiate from polyphonic ringtones by they way they sound and how much space they occupy in your cell phone’s memory. A MIDI ringtone sounds as if a little piano would be playing the song and, although it sounds pretty cool, it have many limitations. For example, with OMD polyphonic ringtones you will be able to listen to the lyrics of any OMD song, like If You Leave. Without an OMD polyphonic ringtone, like a MIDI ringtone, you’ll only be able to hear the rhythm of the song played by distinctive sort of piano keys.

After the movie Pretty in Pink, I fell in love with the OMD song If You Leave and instantly downloaded the OMD polyphonic ringtone to my cell phone. For about six months I had that OMD polyphonic ringtone play each time anyone called me.

Then I got a pretty cool cell phone that let me program a different ringtone for each person that could call me. You can imagine that I ended up downloading the best OMD songs and gave my closest friends a separate OMD polyphonic ringtone each. At first I had to look at the screen to see how it was, but now just by the sound of a different OMD polyphonic ringtone I know who it is.

For my husband I have the If You Leave OMD ringtone and for my mom I have Souvenir. I gave my best friend Tesla Girls because it’s both our favorite song. I have a lot of fun with my friends and family with each of the OMD polyphonic ringtones.

Thank goodness that cell phones can have polyphonic ringtones, I don’t know what I’d do without my OMD polyphonic ringtones that I’ve grown so accustomed to. It may sound a little exaggerated but, as a friend of mine says, once you go polyphonic you can’t go back, or something.

Ringtone for Cellular Phone – Fun and Easy to Use

Ron King asked:

The ever-changing and highly competitive mobile communication industry requires business people to become familiar with the features and accessories available to cell phone user. A daunting array of phones, network technologies and applications are available– everything from Bluetooth, Blackberries, the Razr, Palm devices and of course the latest I-phone. Finding the best cell phone accessories, even something as simple as a ringtone for cellular phone, can be challenging. The names of the most popular carriers such as Motorola, T-Mobile, Verizon, Nextel, Nokia and Sprint, are as known to us as the names of cars. Products such as ringtones and wallpapers are enjoyable, and allow cellphone users to personalize their telephone while making that important call.

Because of the entertaining effect and uniqueness of cellular phone ringtones and cellular phone wallpapers, computer technicians and cellular phone manufacturers are quick to design software and gadgets that will help in the simple installation of ringtones and wallpapers. This gave gave rise to a ringtone converter. The cellular phone ringtone converter will help to get ringtones from one cellular phone to another. These ringtone converters also aid in downloading ringtones from computers and internet sites. These are also cellular phones, which support manual input of cellular phone ringtones. Ringtone transfer via SMS is also possible. A cellular phone ringtone converter may also work when transferring a ringtone from other cellular phone brands. Although there are cellular phone models that do not support ringtone converters, it is however possible that the cellular phone has a built in cellular phone ringtone which will help create a one of a kind identity for your cellular phone.

Availability of ringtone converters, which does not require cables and infrared connections, is easy to use if you need to download mobile phone ringtones. If you are motivated to personalizing your cellular phone ringtone, you may try to look for a cellular phone with fully functional ringtone composer- one of the best cell phone accessories to acquire. Using these services, you may now create and edit cellular phone ringtones when you have this composer in your cellular phone. Editing ringtones and converting your favorite song into a cellular phone ringtone is a snap with the modern ringtone converter. The ringtone composer of your cellular phone may also perform this function as well as your converter.

In addition there are available websites where you can download cellular phone ringtones. There are those websites that use SMS format from where you can download ringtones using a converter, but there are those that simply require the downloading capacity of your phone and nothing more. Using these sites, you will now have cellular phone ringtones that may provide the sounds you want.

Knowing that there are cellular phone ringtone converter and built-in composers, it may further enhance your cellular phone ringtone if you know the software that is the most compatible with your converter. This information will now help you create that style you want for your high-tech toy.

Having all this information, you may visit various internet sites and look for the best monophonic or polyphonic ringtone for your cellular phone, which you may feel is a suited ringtone for your cellular phone. Having a ringtone for cellular phone and cellular phone wallpaper is good; however, you should first check your phone before you even think of ringtones, because editing and downloading ringtones may require help from your own cellular phone model or carrier. Do not worry however if your phone does not support editing and downloading cellular phone ringtones because carriers have built-in ringtones, although it may not be the tunes you want, but just the same you have the ringtone. The best cell phone accessory and ringtone for a cellular phone are out there for those who persevere. Use the internet, read reviews and articles, talk to family and study your cell phone plan and ringtone specs to gather all the steps necessary for developing a digital “voice” that represents the real you!

Why are Ringtones so Popular?

manro asked:

Chalk it up to three main reasons:

1. Image. To everyone in earshot, your ringtone broadcasts a little bit about who you are . . . or who you\’d like them to think you are.

2. Instant identification. If you have ever been in a meeting or with a group of friends and had to play the \”Whose Cell Phone Is It?\” scramble, you can appreciate the advantage of playing \”Name That Tune\” instead.

3. Caller ID. If your cell phone has multiple memory slots, you can immediately know which of your friends, co-workers, or family members is after you by programming specific tones to denote each caller.

The mobile market has been booming these past few years. All over the world, millions of people have embraced the mobile world into their life. The cell phone and their various ringtones have become status symbols. Ringtones show that you\’re up to date and happening. You can even take a test that defines which ringtone best suits your personality. You can truly display your lifestyle and certainly your musical taste on your sleeve.

A quick Google search will produce countless articles trying to understand the popularity of \’ringtones\’; hundreds of bloggers waxing lyrical on the benefits of personalizing their cell phones. The figures are pretty serious too, in the U.S.A. alone, the Yankee Group predicts, ringtones will be worth $500 million. That\’s roughly the GDP of Fiji.

Obviously our cell phones need a voice, but does that voice need to be a polyphonic adaptation of \’Living on a Prayer\’?

Ringtones are melodic sounds a cellular or cell phone makes when an incoming call or message arrives. Since cellular phones are significantly more sophisticated than landline phones, ringtones can be personalized to suit the owner\’s personal taste. A variety of ringtones have appealed to consumers, increasing handsets sale ability.

Types of Ringtones

There are typically three different types of ringtones: monophonic ringtones, polyphonic ringtones and realtones.

Monophonic Ringtones

Monophonic tones are simple tunes, most commonly compatible with today\’s cell phones. The majority of cell phones can only make a single tone at a time. The monophonic ringtone tune is comprised of a series of sequential tones at different frequencies.

Polyphonic Ringtones

Polyphonic tones are played on cellular phones that have the capability of playing up to 64 separate tones at once. The combination of tones creates a harmonic melody. Polyphonic ringtones are more musical than a monophonic ringtone. Newer phones support polyphonic ringtones. It is likely that future cell phones will be capable of producing musical ringtones of CD quality.

Realtones

Real Music ringtones or MP3 Ringtones, are ringtones that came from \”real\” or actual songs.

The Ringtone Hall of Fame

Robert Bentz asked:

Getting ringtones for your cell phone has become one of the hottest ways to set yourself apart on today’s scene. If you want to stand out in a crowd, the ringtone you choose can be a big step in the right direction.

So you want a great ringtone, but have no idea what makes one great? Follow the advice below and learn where the bar has been raised by the top 10 list below, dubbed the first class of the ringtone Hall of Fame.

Separating great ringtones from the rest of the bunch requires a series of judging criteria. First and foremost, a great ringtone must come from a great song. While it is possible for great songs to yield disappointing ringtones, the opposite is impossible. The ringtone must also be easily recognizable to many people. Everyone wants that ringtone that makes people smile and say, “I love that song” when your phone rings.

From a musical standpoint, the ringtone must be created from one of three song portions: the intro, the hook, or the solo. The success of these three parts to the musical equation are make or break for hit songs, making them essential to the success of a ringtone. Because of the technology format, songs that make great ringtones also need to have simple layers. Songs with dueling drums or guitars cause a ringtone to sound cluttered, making it difficult to identify by ear. The intros to songs like “Stairway to Heaven” and “A Thousand Miles” make great ringtones because they are catchy and easy on the ear.

In addition to coming from a particular section of a song, great ringtones must also feature a strong, repetitious percussion line. Whether that persistent pulse comes from the bass line of “Drop It Like It’s Hot” or from the synthesizers in “Take On Me,” the ability for many people to recognize a specific song comes from that repetition.

While the final keystones are being cemented into the ringtone shrine, here are the first ten inductees into the Ringtone Hall of Fame:

1. “In Da Club” 50 Cent

Besides being Billboard’s inaugural Ringtone of the Year in 2004, 50’s first #1 hit has a bass line built for making heads bob. The strings section adds suspense to the song and puts high notes on top of the gutter base line. Having “In Da Club” as a ringtone means the party is never farther away than your phone.

2. “Stairway to Heaven” Led Zeppelin

The calming woodwind that accompanies Page’s slow guitar picking makes for rock and ringtone heaven on earth. Several portions of this song have been made into ringtones, but the tone depicting the song’s introduction is truly a classic.

3. “Sweet Home Alabama” Lynyrd Skynyrd

Music fans of all ages get a smile on their face at the first sound of this southern-rock classic. Change a party’s atmosphere from get together to jamboree by a simple “ring-ring.” The MP3 version is a required tone for country and classic rock fans.

4. “Super Mario Brothers” Game Theme

The essential ringtone for gamers. The polyphonic tone is an exact replication of the track from 16-bit Nintendo.

5. “Halloween” Movie Theme

Perfect custom tone for friends named Michael Myers. One of the most popular ringtones of all time that can outsell pop hits year round.

6. “The Next Episode” Dr. Dre

While many hip-hop ringtones sound poor due to the overuse of dull bass lines, “The Next Episode” features thumping bass and a pulsating G-funk guitar lick, creating the bench mark for multi layered ringtones.

7. “Mission Impossible” Theme Song

Another incredibly popular ringtone despite its age that will only get more popular after the fourth installment of the movie franchise begins filming. Perfect as a custom tone for those over-demanding bosses in the workplace.

8. “Sandstorm” DaRude

Like “Super Mario Brothers,” a distinct song replica is created by the polyphonic ringtone. A must for fans of techno music and another, sure fire, party-starter tone.

9. “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” Theme Song

The only hip-hop song your father can rap over is one of the most recognizable ringtones available. The beat is so contagious that setting it as your default ringer in a public place will cause a room to begin rhyming along as if they were Will Smith.

10. “The Jetsons” Theme Song

While the Jetsons had a lot of great things in their future world, one thing they don’t have is their own song as a phone ringer. We don’t have flying automobiles yet, but show off the evolution of cell phone technology with the upbeat polyphonic ditty.
