The Motorola Milestone – The Best Motorola Smartphone

Simon Drew asked:

The first GSM Android 2.0 handset from Motorola is expected to heat the European markets this December. It’s the Motorola Milestone QWERTY slider and has been released under a different name as the Motorola Droid in the US with just a slight difference – the US edition under Verizon won’t get multitouch capability even if both uses capacitive technology.

Another difference lies in the GPS feature. The Droid comes pre-loaded with Google Maps while the European version comes with Motorola’s own Motonav which has the same spoken turn-by-turn navigation and mapping feature. Other than these differences, both smartphones have identical hardware features.

Availability

Italy and Germany will get it first in time for Christmas and other EU countries to follow. It’s not sure if UK markets will get it before the year is out. The O2 Germany web site indicates a contract-free price of EUR481 which certainly puts it in the affordable range of flagship smartphones.

Flagship Features

Motorola is hoping to bring back its glory days as a mobile phone leader with this remarkable flagship. It packs high end features at a price that’s definitely friendlier than many top class smartphones in the market.

This is a quad band GSM and twin-band UMTS supporting HSPA data connectivity for a fast internet browsing and downloading experience on the road. Plus, you get WiFi 802.11b/g as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR for wireless data connectivity. This is a hefty device with real glass covering the display and a metal casing to give it 169 grams of weight. But it is very close to the iPhone 3G size at 115.8 x 60 x 13.7mm which still makes it pocketable. Were it not for the fact that it’s a QWERTY slider, the Milestone could very be a direct rival to the iPhone. It’s got top-of-the-line imaging features from a 5.0 megapixel autofocus camera that gets flash support from the latest Android 2.0 OS (Previous versions couldn’t support one.). Though exhibiting some shutter slowness, you do get quality VGA recording at decent frame rates. As it is, the N97 is a better rival and easily trumps it. There’s a 256 MB internal RAM and 512 of storage for the users, plus a micro SD slot for up to 32GB of external memory. Its multimedia features start with a large 3.7″ capacitive touchscreen with wide-VGA resolution that can shame the Samsung AMOLED displays on their flagship models. To say that it is stunning is an understatement. With a 1400 mAh lithium-ion batter, you get 6.5 hours of talk time and 14 days on standby, which is fairly typical for smartphones of this size and class.
Conclusion

The Motorola Milestone/Droid smartphone will certainly be a major milestone for the company. If anything can turn around Motorola, this is it. At a very reasonable price tag, this is one handset that combines the versatility of flagship phones like the HTC Hero with the sophistication of a Nokia N97 housed in an elegant all-metal case that feels very solid in the hands. No other full QWERTY slider touchscreen smartphone can touch it with the value proposition it brings to the market.

Motorola Droid Challenges Palm Pre Plus – Who Has the Better Smart Cell Phone?

Lance Winslow asked:

Few would deny that Palm Pre Plus is not an elegant little device. It is cool, trendy, and has lots of cool features – brilliant technology indeed. Still, there are some who have compared it to the Motorola Droid and comeback with some critique. Now before we trash on the Palm Pre Plus, let’s remember than when it is stacked up next to the Apple 3GS iPhone, the Motorola Droid walks away as the clear champion. Needless to say, any smart phone would be challenged against the Droid by Motorola.

Interestingly enough, in an article in Hispanic Business News, reporter and personal tech tester and writer Jeremy Nisen stated in an article titled; “Palm Pre Plus: Impressive Technology Hasn’t Ironed Out the Frustrations,” dated March 2, 2010 seems to agree. Like most he liked the slide out key board, mirror, and “card-based operating system” he said. He is right, I completely agree with his assessment of Palm Pre, plus, I’d add that the phone just looks cool to me.

If you look at the reviews in PC World, on YouTube, or in Personal Tech Magazine you will see mixed reviews and most of the reviewers stating that the key board, style, and navigation is a matter of preference, what the user is used to and their likes and dislikes. Thus, the Palm Pre + is not for everyone, but if you are a key-board smart phone type of person, it does hit the spot indeed. Some reviewers have spoken ill of the digital camera feature, but my close friend owns one and he likes it, and he let me try it, it worked fine for me when I snapped some shots of the clerk at Starbucks in the daylight.

Some have said that the touch screen does not work as well as Apple, Droid, or Nexus One, but I thought it was okay, maybe those folks are just spoiled by the other technologies. The ion-lithium battery seems to be insufficient for a full-days usage, which is something you need to think on, but before I get too awfully critical, I’d like to mention another fact.

Out of all the smart phones I’ve tested over this last month, none of them seem to have adequate battery life. Now there are batteries you can buy that are after market and much more powerful, unfortunately, they also add weight, and this is why smart cell phone makers are reluctant to make them standard, as they are all competing for the lowest weight, and that means personal tech bragging rights. Please consider all this.

Google Phone Versus iPhone 4G

Leif Cameo asked:

Background

There has been a lot of news circulating about the possibility of a handset designed and built by Google and running their Android software.

But, what to believe? Would Google release a phone to rival that of their customers (Motorola, HTC). Also, if released will it be the phone to finally knock the iPhone off its pedestal?

Current state of the handset market

It’s all go at the moment with Apple expected to set a definite release date for their iPhone 4G on Monday June 7th and the Android increasing in popularity on a daily basis. A lot of mobile phone customers are waiting to upgrade or buy new handsets but are unsure what platform to commit to.

The Google Android Operating System

When Google bought over Android Inc back in 2005, they acquired a company who specialised in mobile phone software and operating systems.

Now in 2010, Android has been released on numerous devices, notably the most recent HTC handsets.

The iPhone 4G

Almost everyone reading this will have seen the leaked footage of the iPhone 4G on the internet and Apple’s scurried attempts to maintain its secrecy. Rumours are flying around on the new features (HD video streaming and recording, TV, ultra fast internet connection etc) and we are expecting Apple’s official release on Monday June 7th.

The Big Question

So do you join the new generation of Android users or wait for Apple’s much anticipated iPhone 4G?

In terms of functionality they are very similar but where Apple is largely in favour of HTML5, Android offers easier compatibility for developers through Flash, which Apple is slowly trying to edge out of its products.

Apple has an established back catalogue of apps and rarely lets you down with its updates. However, Android is an exciting new platform and is apparently converting 10,000+users daily.

Mr Jobs, the ball is in your court, let’s hope this update is as good as all of us in the mobile phone industry are anticipating.

Samsung Galaxy Super AMOLED Displays Reach New Levels in Handset Display Quality

Dan Ponjican asked:

The latest addition to the ever growing list of Android smartphones is the Samsung Galaxy S series of devices. These hot new phones feature a new display technology called the Super AMOLED display. This new display promises to set this device apart from its competition by taking the display quality to a whole new level.

One of the many versions of the Samsung Galaxy S series is the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate for Verizon Wireless. It has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display running at WVGA an 800 x 480 resolution. It is armed with a 5-megapixel autofocus camera, the 1GHz Hummingbird processor and the Samsung’s own custom UI and “social hub” for its integrated social networking department. Other than that, there is also A-GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0 and WiFi b/g/n, with on board storage of either 8GB or 16GB. Do not be disappointed with the small storage space as it can be expanded thanks to the microSD card slot happy with up to 32GB cards. Connectivity of the model includes quadband GSM and also triband (900/1900/2100) UMTS/HSPA.

Of all its amazing features, the Super AMOLED screen is the one that truly pops out of the smart phone. The smart phone itself is super light and thin, making it accessible to the trendy people looking for feather weight smart phone. Other than that, it also has touch sensors on the display itself as opposed to creating a separate layer, another quality that contributes to the thin form factor.

With Super AMOLED display technology, it will make all your viewing experiences a whole new level of goodness. It will be unlike anything you have ever seen. The colours of the pictures seem like they burst out of its screen, each one rich and bright. Watching videos and animations from the Samsung Galaxy S series with the Super AMOLED displays is truly an awesome experience as all the movements of the videos and animations are so beautiful and fluid. This is especially true when watching animations. With the Super AMOLED display, all the animations seem lively and have a life of its own. The movements of the animations are smooth and similar to real life.

Besides that, the smart phone’s rather large 4-inch Super AMOLED display delivers great viewing space with minor reflection. Viewing angles are amazing and it has super-fast touch-response. The mDNIe, which stands for mobile Digital Natural Image engine, is a technology widely used in most of the Samsung’s best-selling LCD and LED TVs and this helps to boost an even sharper and crisper viewing experience for anything, be it photos, videos, or even e-books. It creates a perfect environment to do anything such as to record, edit and play HD video, to browse the Internet, and to read your favorite e-books. Once you have experienced the Samsung Galaxy S series mobile phones powered by the Super AMOLED displays, nothing will ever be the same again.

Which One Do You Buy – HTC Droid Incredible Or Motorola Droid Phone?

Zammax Se asked:

Since the HTC Droid Incredible was launched last month, it has been interesting to compare it with the previous handset: the Motorola Droid. Although most people say that the Droid Incredible outpoints the Motorola Droid, it is useful for us to know the comparison more details as follows:

Display
With the latest touchscreen technology: OLED, the HTC is better than the Motorola Droid that sports LCD. We notice the better comparison of both screens if it is faced up to a direct sunlight. LCDs are quite literally pale in comparison to the brightness and vibrance of a quality OLED.

Processor
For the processor, I think 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon that is embedded in HTC Incredible is the more powerful than the 550Mhz Arm Cortex A8 processor. With 1Ghz Snapdragon, the Incredible become very responsive to the applications.

Camera
In this section, the HTC is still the winner over the Motorola. Not only it has 8 megapixel camera but also the camera comes with dual-LED flash, autofocus, and on-the-fly adjustments for brightness, contrast, and ISO level, which give it the leg up on the Droid’s admittedly very competent cam.

Software
Both smartphones use Android. Although the HTC still comes with Android 2.1 (the latest is the Android 2.2), it still beats the Motorola Droid that runs the Anroid 2.1.

Memory
Both smartphones offer expandable memory with microSD slot, but for internal memory, the Motorola comes with 16GB over 8GB of the Incredible that has only 8GB.

Battery Life
The Motorola Droid claims has lithium ion battery that rates up to 385 minutes of standby time and 270 of standby time. You can compare it with HTC’s battery that only rates up to 312 minutes of talk time and 146 hours of standby time.

Bottom Line
With a similar price around $ 200, the HTC is better than the Motorola. We know it from several key features such as display, camera, software and processor that win over the Motorola but of course, every one has their own preferences. So, which one do you like best?

The Droid Smart Phone Review

Roberto Sedycias asked:

The new Droid phone by Motorola is living up to the hype. Many people are saying that it is comparable to the iPhone with some better features. It is the first phone of its kind to be compared to the iPhone on a comparable scale and have some people reaching past the iPhone and choosing the Droid.

The Droid is a classy looking phone that is big and easy to grip. Its screen is 3.7 inches which is even bigger than the iPhone. It contains 16 million hues for color and 440×1854 pixels making it a bright and matte looking finish. The graphics are sharp and detailed and truly impressive to look at.

The keyboard is flat with big buttons that make it easy for some people to use and tricky for others because of the smoothness of the keys. The Droid is a bit heavy weighting 5.96 oz and seems bigger than the iPhone; however it has a trim looking design that makes it easy to grasp.

Some common complaints about the Droid are that its sliding motion is a bit stiff making it hard to open. And on the opposite end, closing the Droid can seem a bit too sensitive. Many people say that by accident the Droid`s keyboard seems to close on them before they are even ready. The Droid also does not have physical talk control which means that to access the phone you have to close the menu and open a new application to access the calling functions.

Also many people argue that it takes too long to call somebody and then that there is no easy way to hang up from a phone call. The dial pad accessibility seems inadequate and the calendars are not fully integrated and there is no dual mode. Its phone features seem to suffer as they paid lots of attention to the web browser.

Accessing the web is a quick and easy. The Droid has a strong wireless connection service that is sure to please even the pickiest of customers. There are widgets on the screen that are fast to access and give immediate results. Many people were happy with the speed of the internet service.

Although it`s a Motorola phone, it doesn’t feature MotoBlur software as on the Clic; however it has been argued that the Droid is aimed at a different customer base. There are many applications that have been added including Android 2.0 updates. People love the new applications and the way in which they can easily access them. The handset is extremely fast making it easy to use.

Selecting a phone can be tricky, with all of the options, colors and styles available. Motorola customers who are loyal to their brand have enjoyed using the Droid and say that the web browsing options are wonderful while they were slightly disappointed with the phone accessibility. Most people would argue that it`s just a matter of taste and that everyone will have a different view and opinion. Its nice shinny design makes it nice to look at and with such a huge screen it lives up to its glamour look and style. It has been marketed toward competing with the iPhone and seems to do just that as it goes head to head with the most popular brand around.
